Relics¶
Relics are objects believed to possess historical, religious, magical, or divine significance.
They are found throughout Lazuril and play an important role in religion, pilgrimage, politics, and historical scholarship.
Relics may include:
- Bones or remains of saints
- Weapons
- Armour
- Sacred texts
- Tools
- Jewellery
- Fragments of ruins
- Ritual objects
- Objects associated with miracles
Overview¶
The importance of relics varies between cultures and churches.
Some faiths regard relics as sacred conduits of divine power.
Others treat them primarily as historical artefacts.
Many relics are disputed.
Questions regarding authenticity became especially important after War of the False Saints, during which forged relics were widely used to manipulate religious authority and public belief.
Authentication¶
Most major churches maintain procedures for relic examination.
Authentication may involve:
- Historical record comparison
- Material analysis
- Magical examination
- Witness testimony
- Provenance review
- Scriptor archive verification
Some relics remain officially unverified despite widespread public devotion.
Categories¶
Relics are commonly grouped into broad categories.
These include:
- Holy relics
- Historical relics
- Battle relics
- Pilgrimage relics
- Sealed relics
- Dangerous relics
- Disputed relics
Different churches use different classification systems.
Pilgrimage¶
Major relics often become centres of pilgrimage.
Pilgrimage sites may attract:
- Worshippers
- Merchants
- Scholars
- Healers
- Fraudsters
- Political envoys
- Miracle seekers
Control of an important relic site can provide major economic and political influence.
Dangerous Relics¶
Some relics are considered hazardous due to:
- Magical instability
- Religious corruption
- Historical contamination
- Unknown properties
- Links to dangerous cults or entities
Certain relics are sealed within archive vaults, hidden shrines, or restricted church chambers.
Current Status¶
Relics remain central to many religious traditions across Lazuril.
At the same time, most major institutions acknowledge that relics can be forged, altered, misidentified, or politically manipulated.
Because of this, relic examination remains an important responsibility of Scriptors and inquisitorial authorities.
