Heresy¶
Heresy is the formal rejection, corruption, alteration, or unauthorised interpretation of recognised religious doctrine.
The exact definition varies between churches, regions, and historical periods.
Throughout Arkhaven, accusations of heresy may carry religious, political, or legal consequences.
Overview¶
Heresy is not universally defined across Lazuril.
A belief condemned in one region may be tolerated or even accepted elsewhere.
Despite these differences, most major churches classify heresy under several broad categories.
Common Forms of Heresy¶
Commonly recognised forms include:
- False prophecy
- Forged miracles
- Doctrinal alteration
- Unauthorized scripture
- Worship of forbidden entities
- Fabricated sainthood
- Corruption of relics
- Magical impersonation of divine power
- Rejection of recognised religious authority
- Ritual practices considered dangerous or forbidden
The treatment of heresy became significantly stricter after War of the False Saints.
Investigation¶
Most major churches rely upon Scriptors or Inquisitor-Scriptor authorities when investigating major heresy cases.
Investigations may involve:
- Witness examination
- Archive comparison
- Relic inspection
- Magical analysis
- Review of doctrine
- Observation of rituals
- Examination of prophecy claims
Political Use¶
Accusations of heresy are not always theological.
Historical records confirm that rulers, churches, and political factions have used heresy accusations to:
- Remove rivals
- Justify wars
- Suppress dissent
- Seize property
- Control religious institutions
- Undermine political legitimacy
Because of this, major accusations often require formal review.
Regional Variation¶
The treatment of heresy varies considerably across Lazuril.
Some regions punish only severe religious fraud or dangerous cult activity.
Others maintain strict doctrinal systems in which even minor deviation may attract investigation.
Border regions and isolated settlements often develop local practices that exist outside recognised doctrine entirely.
Current Status¶
Heresy remains one of the most politically sensitive subjects in Lazurilian religious law.
Although most churches accept that interpretation and disagreement are unavoidable, they also recognise that uncontrolled doctrinal fragmentation contributed directly to the disasters of the Age of False Saints.
