Haskarn Freeholds¶
The Haskarn Freeholds are a loose collection of mostly human frontier settlements that expanded outward from The Vermillion Crown.
They are made up of independent villages, towns, and growing cities that exist as farming, fishing, and trade communities rather than as a single unified nation.
Government¶
The Freeholds govern themselves locally.
Each settlement may have its own mayor, council, landowning families, guild leaders, militia captains, or elected representatives, depending on its size and development.
Their politics are practical and self-interested, focused on land claims, food production, security, trade access, and relations with the Vermillion Crown.
Dominant Peoples¶
The population is mainly human, descended from settlers, farmers, traders, fishers, and frontier families who moved away from the Vermillion Crown heartland.
Other peoples may live there in small numbers, especially merchants, labourers, guides, or travellers moving between neighbouring regions.
Region and Biome¶
The Haskarn Freeholds lie between the north-western trade routes and the Vermillion Crown state.
They have access to both the sea and a large lake, giving them fishing, shipping, and trade opportunities.
The land is settled but not especially rich, with soil that is less fertile than the southern lands of the Verdant Confederacy and the The Leridian Concord.
Culture¶
Haskarn culture is practical, expansionist, and frontier-minded.
Most communities value land ownership, farming, fishing, local independence, and the promise of social advancement through settlement.
Goods from the north-west are shipped through Haskarn territory toward the Vermillion Crown, making the Freeholds useful as a trade corridor as well as a frontier society.
Religion and Magic¶
Magic is relatively uncommon and not central to daily life.
Religion is varied, with many gods worshipped across different towns and families.
Agricultural gods similar to Chauntea are especially important, as many settlers pray for better harvests and more fertile soil.
Faith in the Freeholds is usually practical rather than highly formalised, focused on crops, weather, childbirth, protection, and survival.
Tensions¶
The main tension is the Freeholds’ relationship with the Vermillion Crown.
Although the settlements see themselves as independent, their legal foundations are tied to contracts, land grants, farming rights, and settlement charters issued or recognised by the Vermillion Crown.
Over time, these agreements allow the Vermillion Crown to absorb or dominate the Freeholds politically.
The region also faces pressure from neighbouring peoples who see Haskarn expansion as a threat, especially the Zul’Akari Clans and the Kharad Wildlands.
Military strength is limited, usually consisting of local militias with basic training and equipment.
