Houses of Bârathanaear¶
The Houses of Bârathanaear (Home beyond the sea in common) are a coastal elven state south of The Eldermarch Court, known for comfort, wealth, beauty, and political moderation.
Unlike their northern kin, they place less value on ancient claims of conquest and more value on prosperity, leisure, diplomacy, and quality of life.
Government¶
Bârathanaear is ruled by numerous elven houses through a democratic system.
The noble houses hold political influence, but power is shared through councils, votes, and negotiated agreements rather than rule by a single monarch or elder bloodline.
Public consensus, house reputation, wealth, and civic contribution all affect political status.
Dominant Peoples¶
The dominant people of Bârathanaear are elves, particularly coastal and highland elven houses with long-established estates, vineyards, ports, and civic holdings.
Other peoples may live in the region as merchants, labourers, diplomats, or permanent residents, though elven culture remains the centre of public life.
Region and Biome¶
Bârathanaear lies south of the Eldermarch Court, along a warm but temperate coast.
Its lands include lush grassy plains, fertile valleys, coastal settlements, and mountain ranges that protect much of its northern frontier.
The main vulnerable border is the direct land boundary with the Eldermarch Court, where natural defences are weaker and political tensions are higher.
Culture¶
Bârathanaear culture is wealthy, relaxed, and civic-minded.
Its people value luxury, art, good food, fine wines, coastal estates, music, open debate, and beautiful surroundings.
Compared to the Eldermarch Court, Bârathanaear is more modernised and less obsessed with bloodline supremacy.
Its citizens generally prefer diplomacy and comfort over expansion or ideological conflict.
Religion and Magic¶
Magic is widely used to improve daily life.
It supports agriculture, architecture, healing, sanitation, transport, entertainment, and luxury crafts.
Religion appears to be secondary to civic life and comfort, though the houses pay respectful pilgrimage to the Martarië Crown, mainly as a gesture of cultural respect and to avoid unnecessary disputes with other elven powers.
Tensions¶
The main tension is with the Eldermarch Court to the north.
The dispute is based on land rights, political philosophy, and differing views of elven identity.
Bârathanaear prefers modernisation, comfort, and democratic house politics, while the Eldermarch Court favours ancient lineage, strict hierarchy, and territorial claims.
Despite this, Bârathanaear only fights the north when necessary.
Its southern and eastern borders are relatively secure due to stable relations with Tirith I Daur to the south and the Verdant Confederacy to the east.
